The present invention discloses a simple green and versatile method for synthesizing a variety of tetrapyridylcyclobutanes, said method relates to the synthesis of 1 ,2 ,3 ,4-(4-pyridyl)cyclobutane, 1 ,2 ,3 ,4-(3-pyridyl)cyclobutane, 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 -(2-pyridyl)cyclobutane synthesis. The synthesis method described in the present application is based on the synthesis of dipyridyl vinyls (e.g., 1 ,2-bis(4-pyridyl)vinyl, 1 ,2-bis(3-pyridyl)vinyl, 1 ,2-bis(2- pyridinyl)ethylene) as raw material by light irradiation of 1 ,2-bis(4-pyridinyl)ethylene, 1 ,2-bis(3-pyridinyl)ethylene, or 1 ,2-bis(2-pyridinyl ) ethylene solutions frozen after icing, and isolated and purified to obtain the corresponding tetrapyridylcyclobutane (e.g., 1 ,2 ,3 ,4-(4-pyridyl)cyclobutane, 1 ,2 ,3 ,4-(3-pyridyl)cyclobutane, or 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 -(2-pyridyl)cyclobutane). The method does not require the use of organic or metal eutectic molecules, does not require post-separation, does not require the use of organic substances other than ethanol, and is simple, green and non-polluting.
