The zwitterionic precursor, namely (N-methoxyacylethyl)-3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (MAPS), was synthesized by aza-Michael addition, which can in situ generate zwitterionic structure upon seawater or other neutral/alkaline aqueous media. MAPS was incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings or moisture-curable polyacrylate (MCP) coatings to get zwitterion-based marine antifouling coatings.
